Floral Pairings - Fall #3
There is something about having a limited supply that forces you too be extra creative in putting together arrangements. With most flowers being done for the season some time ago, I've noticed more subtle things that might otherwise I would not have seen.
I love the way that when you put flowers and greenery together, they bring out elements of each other that you otherwise wouldn't have noticed. For example the mint leaves had turned the slightest shade of crimson on their outer tips. Next the the subtle pink in these Gomphrena flowers, suddenly the pairing was obvious. In the first arrangement which I created in a celadon vase I made many years ago, I loved the way the celadon glaze paired so well with the silvery leaves, and set the tone for this arrangement. And of course the mint! Going to plant a few varieties of mint in my wild garden so it can roam a bit. Such great looking and smelling greenery!
I harvested leaves and flowers from the pot plants on the deck, as temperatures are going to go below freezing starting this week, and I realized how much I love the character of the nasturtium leaves. This arrangement I did in one of my treasured Astier de Villatte vases that I bought last time I was in Paris. The narrow neck of this jug form allowed the nasturtium leaves to stand upright, which I love.
The third arrangement is in another vase I made a couple of years ago - I have struggled to find a glaze with this form that I am happy with, though once I put these rich maroon, crimson and pink flowers and seeds into it, it came into it's own. I'll still look to find a different glaze over time - this one is too shiny for what I had in mind, but in the meantime the flowers have allowed me to see it from a different perspective. Thank you flowers.
The final image is a single nasturtium flower - the only one that bloomed on my deck. It was just too hot for them on the deck, so I will sow new seeds in the garden beds next spring and hope for an abundance!
