Ceramics Journal - Fall #3

Ceramics Journal - Fall #3

November 5th started these vases....I only had it in me to make cylinders that day...though after I threw them I wanted to add some beauty. Rolling each little ball and applying to the rim was calming and meditative in nature, and so I went with that, and have been continuing to do make these forms the past couple of weeks. I love the daintiness of them.

I also decided to add lugs to the sides of some, which looked a lot like ears, and gave each one a sense of personality:

I used a rounded sculpting tool to draw the ball of clay down onto the cylinder, thinking I would get a woven quality like lace or something. It soon became apparent that they looked more like teeth, which at first I thought was a bad thing. Then I decided to embrace the anatomical similarity and made another - I can't wait to see these glazed in white to see how they look! From a certain perspective I feel like they have a prehistoric, ceremonial quality to them.
